The Nevada Gaming Commission regulator has approved the business relationship between Caesars Interactive Entertainment Incorporated and 888 Holdings. For the first time, a Las Vegas land based casino will be able to offer online poker to customers based outside of the United States. This was made possible by building a joint venture with 888. It also reveals that efforts to legalize online poker in the United States are gaining steam.
Gibraltar-based 888 is one of the world’s largest online gaming operators offering online betting, online poker, casino games and bingo to UK customers, where the brand is a household name and to customers globally. Caesars Interactive is the online subsidiary of Caesars Entertainment Corporation, the world’s largest land-based gaming company and owners of the world’s famous Caesars Casino in Las Vegas, and many other casinos and hotels.
The agreement signed by 888, through its Dragonfish subsidiary, and Caesars Interactive sets that 888 is to provide the website technology and services for the launch of the World Series of Poker and Caesars brands websites.
Although these online gaming sites are only available to players in the UK and not those in the United States, Las Vegas-based Caesars Entertainment submitted a request to the Nevada Gaming Commission and the Nevada State Gaming Control Board last year in order to obtain the necessary approvals. They have to respect the law in Nevada even when offering services abroad. This week marked the final approval for the business relationship between Caesars Interactive and 888. This is the first time that regulators have explicitly allowed a land-based casino operator from the United States to do online business with a foreign company offering online gambling. Online gambling is still illegal in the United State although a few states are currently reviewing their position in regards to online poker. New Jersey, California, Florida and Iowa have already made the first steps towards regulating online gambling.
Obviously, both 888 and Caesars Entertainment are very happy with the outcome and look forward to promoting their websites. The news was also welcomed by the stock market where 888, listed on the London stock exchange, jumps 8% after receiving the approval from Nevada regulators.
Analysts predict that the approval could lead to more claims being put through for clearance by the Nevada State Gaming Control Board. It is also bring water the mill of campaigners who want to see the regulation of online gambling in the United States, at least on a state-by-state basis. US based gamblers might soon be able to start playing online again!
